Catalogue Note
Kinkichi goes to visit Tanabe Bunzô to get back the money he lent him, pulling up the sleeve of his kimono preparing for a potential fight. He wears a black sleeve shirt and a yellow and red kimono. The cruelty of the character is outlined by his tightly sealed lips and thick eyebrows. A red make up around his eyes emphasized his determined expression.
The ehon banyuke illustrated a scene in which Bunzô, handicapped and poor, is represented sitting down, writing a letter when Ishibe Kinkichi arrives to get back the money he lent him. Kinkichi raises his arm, his kimono sleeve up, and intend to hit Bunzô from behind with a kick.
One of the most famous design in Sharaku work, around 30 copies known, hardly any other in such well preserved state (freshness of the colours). Other examples in Tokyo, Kokuritsu Hakubutsan (Ins.Ms) – Tokyo, Ricca Bijusukan – Tokyo, Ota Bijutsukan – Amsterdam Rijksmuseum – London British Museum – New York Metropolitan Museum – Paris Guimet.
