Catalogue Note

It is rare to find Qianlong mark and period trays of this type decorated in famille-rose enamels, although a similar example was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 20th March 1990, lot 803. See also a pair of Qianlong trays of the same quatrefoil form with the lotus scroll design painted on a lime-green ground sold in our London rooms, 20th June 2001, lot 35.

Related trays are also known from the Jiaqing period (1796-1820); see, for example, a pair of trays from the collection of Dr. Ip Yee included in the exhibition Ch'ing Polychrome Porcelain, Fung Ping Shan Museum, Hong Kong, 1977, cat. no. 101, and sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 24th May 1985, lot 412. Jiaqing trays of this shape can also be found with a green-ground border but the centre inscribed with a poem in praise of good tea and dated to the first year of Jiaqing's reign, corresponding to 1797, published in Soame Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, London, 1951, pl. CXI.
