Catalogue Note

Collier trained in Haarlem and in Leiden, where he entered the Guild in 1673. He was clearly an interesting character as is demonstrated by his still life paintings and by his private life; he was married three times in the space of eleven years, between 1670 and 1681, each time in Leiden. Collier's trompe l'oeil still lifes are remarkably naturalistic; the seemingly random and informal arrangement of objects appears to have no message, unlike his Vanitas still lifes which demonstrated his interest in the passage of time and the frivolity and insubstantiality of man. Collier moved to London in 1696; he seems to have started to include English motifs in his trompe l'oeil still lifes long before going to England as this picture demonstrates by including the naval reward medal of Charles II.
