Description
- Robert Knight
- a trompe l'oeil still-life with a hunting horn and game pouch, bird-of-prey hoods and other hunting paraphernalia, all hanging below a bird's cage

Oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 28 May 1999 lot 1, where purchased by the present owners.
Literature
E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stillebenmacher, Lingen 1995, p. 560, reproduced.
Condition
The canvas has an effective relining. The paint surface is secure and stable and under a yellowed and uneven varnish. The paint surface is dirty but appears to the naked eye to be structurally sound other than some minor abrasion, for example below the sheath and centre left. Inspection under UV light reveals minor scattered retouchings, for example in the bird cage, but the reflective varnish prevents satisfactory analysis.
Offered in a modern wooden frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
The little-known still-life painter Robert Knight was mainly active in Dordrecht. He is known to have painted in the style of Christoffel Pierson and in particular the Leemans brothers, whose influence can most clearly be felt in the present work.
