Description

  • oil on canvas, in an English, carved giltwood 'Sunderland' frame, 17th century
Oil on canvas, in a Sunderland frame

Provenance

The Earls Spencer, Althorp, Northampton (possibly their wax seal affixed to the reverse);
From whom purchased by the present owners.

Literature

K. Garlick, A Catalogue of Pictures at Althorp, in the Walpole Society, XLV, 1976, Vol. XLV, p. 39, no. 302, where listed as Italian School, 17th century, probably a 17th-century version of a work by an imitator of Titian.

Condition

The canvas has a recent and very tight relining. The paint surface is secure under a slightly discoloured varnish. The paint surface is somewhat abraded in the fleshtones and the Madonna's blue cloak. Inspection under UV light reveals some old restored damage lower and centre left and some scattered retouchings in the fleshotones and in Saint Catherine's cloak. Offered in an elaborate carved and gilt wood frame in fair condition but with some cracks in the joins at the corners.
