"Se nei Sacchi, che avevano rappresentato l'assoluta presa di coscienza di Burri su se stesso, la materia appariva come alla lente, in una presenza quasi allucinante e ossessiva, codesta materia, nelle combustioni, viene retrocessa al nulla. Ma non ci lasceremo tentare di stabilire un parallelo con 'Sein und Zeit'... Certo, l'epoca di Burri è questa, che, non a caso, ha preso coscienza di se stessa con l'esistenzialismo, ma è quest'epoca, non l'esistenzialismo, che sta alla base di Burri: la sua materia carbonizzata non è il nulla ontologico di Haidegger (...). Non è filosofia, né mistica: è il modo che ha l'epoca di bruciare se stessa e di rinascere..."
