Description

  • A Marble Head of Aphrodite

  • Height 12 1/4 in. 31.1 cm.
From a lifesize figure of the goddess, carved for insertion into a statue, turned to her right, with straight nose and parted lips, her hair parted in the center, bound in a diadem, tied in a top-knot on the crown, and falling over the nape of the neck.

Condition

Three quarters of upper lip and one half of lower lip restored, nostrils appear to have been filed down slightly, upper edge of neck insert chipped all around including drapery fold on proper left shoulder, note scratches and chips to proper right side of neck, red pigment present on hair, roughly worked surface of neck insert, and eyes, a modern painted inscription "J. PERDIOS" still barely visible below neck on proper left side.
