Description

  • A Byzantine Mosaic Fragment, Syria
  • 25 1/2 by 31 1/2 in. 64.8 by 80 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a fruit basket, a beribboned parrot, a duck, and other elements within a lattice pattern of linked roses; together with a custom-made modern wood table.

Condition

Tesserae sunk into approx. 3/4-inch modern cement backing framed in steel, areas of missing stone tesseare filled with grout, several glass tesserae are either missing or have deteriorated, mostly in parrot, surface covered in layer of shellac or wax which has turned yellow over time; wood table with some minor surface scratches to top under the mosaic, otherwise in very good condition.
