An ebony quarter chiming table clock, Justin Vulliamy, London, circa 1775

6½-inch enamel dial with well pierced steel hands, set on a brass surround with rococo spandrels, the arch with a mock pendulum aperture flanked by subsidiary strike/silent and regulation dials and signed Just Vulliamy, London, the six pillar three train fusee and chain movement with verge escapement, rise and fall regulation, chiming the quarters on a nest of six bells and striiing on a further bell, the backplate engraved with foliate scrolls around a basket of flowers, the case with shallow domed top and urn finial above an engraved frieze fret, the sides with brass carrying hadles above finely pierced and engraved foliate frets, simlar door frets to the front and rear, on moulded block feet

Dial has very minor hairline cracks between V and VII, otherwise very good. MOvement is complete and running at time of cataloguing. Case in good condition throughout with old minor marks and scuffs. With pendulum, winder and case key.

Francois Justin Vulliamy was the first member of this famous clockmaking family to achieve a reputation for excellence in Britain. He came from Switzerland in 1730 and, in 1743, formed a partnership with Benjamin Gray, whose daughter he married in 1746. In 1742 George II granted Gray the Royal warrant and after his death in 1764 it passed to Justin Vulliamy, remaining with his family for three generations until 1854.
