Catalogue Note
Andrew Marvell was effectively the Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth (1642-1660). In the nineteenth century this portrait was thought to represent him. The date of the costume and youthful appearance of the sitter make this unlikely, furthermore the present sitter does not resemble the poet's officially acknowledged portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Propert, a previous owner of this work, was a highly successful physician who ran a general practise in New Cavendish Street, London. A connoisseur of the arts, he was also a respected amateur etcher and painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1870 and 1882.
