Catalogue Note

The sitter was born in 1730 and baptised in August at St. Anne's Church, Westminster. She was the daughter of Thomas Pelham of Stanmer, Sussex and Annetta, daughter of Thomas Bridges.

She married firstly the Hon. Richard Temple M.P. (c.1726-1749) in May 1748. Sadly, he died of small-pox within a year of the union and it was not until four years later, in February 1753, that she married for a second time, George, 1st Earl of Abergavenny (1727-1785). She died at Bristol in August 1768 and was survived by her two children and her husband.
