Catalogue Note
The base on the offered lot closely relates to an etching by the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham representing an ancient Roman marble tripod published in Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture drawn from the Originals in Rome and Other Parts of Italy during the years 1794, 1795, and 1796, 1799. The same etching also provided the inspiration for a table designed by Thomas Hope, illustrated in Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl.15, fig. 1.
A mahogany tripod stand based on Hope`s design, formerly in the collection of the Duke of Newcastle at Clumber, Nottinghamshire, and now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, rev.ed., 1965, p.21, fig. 21
