Catalogue Note

A pair of day beds supported by very similar lion monopodia, was supplied by Gillows of Lancaster to Colonel Hughes of Kinmel Park, Denbighshire in 1805. One of the beds is recorded in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, op. cit.,  p. 58, fig. 108; the other was sold Christie's Sheringham Hall, 22nd-23rd October 1986, lot 151. Kinmel Park was re-modelled and improved by Samuel Wyatt at the time of the Gillow commission, and it is possible that Wyatt was responsible for the design of the furniture, although similar lion monopodia appear in all the leading pattern books of the Regency period.

Closely related cabinets, likewise attributed to Gillows include a pair of parcel-gilt rosewood cabinets sold from Savoy Croft, Ayrshire by Phillips, Glasgow, July 1991; a pair of marble topped rosewood side cabinet, sold Sotheby's London, 19 November 1993, lot 143; and a single marble topped rosewood side cabinet sold Christie's London, 17 April 1997, lot 235.
