Provenance

Probably supplied to John, 1st Marquess of Bute (1744-1814) following his marriage in 1800 to Frances, daughter of Thomas Coutts.

Thence by descent until sold, Christie's London, Works of Art from The Bute Collection, 3 July 1996, lot 39, £42,000.

Condition

Exceptional quality. Good overall condition. Some minor integral cracks to veneers to bandings.

Catalogue Note

The present cabinet closely relates to a design for a commode recorded in The Gillows Estimate Sketch books preserved at the Westminster Library, illustrated in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, 1995, fig. 123. Further comparison can be made to a `Lady's Secretary & Cabinet' cabinet illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1802, pl. 64.
