On a now unlocated 1921 photograph of the painting, Vonnoh commented: "Pleasant Valley / Lyme Conn. / painted 4 or 5 years ago / a pastoral Landscape / and a poets day / one could but reflect / at least, some of the / charm of such a time / and place- / Robert Vonnoh."
