William Tylee Ranney
1813 - 1857
THE BUTTONWOOD GROVE

This painting has been examined by Linda Bantel. She writes: "
..The subject is a buttonwood (sycamore) grove and hence it is possible that it is Ranney catalogue no. 127, owned by William Menzies, a prominent New York book and art collector, who in 1858 bought three works directly from the Ranney estate sale, and sold two of them in his own 1876 sale."

Provenance

(possibly) Sale: Ranney Fund, National Academy of Design, New York, December 1858, lot 44, as Finished Sketch from Nature
(possibly) William Menzies (sold: Catalogue of a Collection of Fine Modern Paintings by Celebrated American and Foreign Artists, Belonging to William Menzies, Esq., Messrs. Leavitt, Auctioneers, New York, April 18 and 19, 1876, lot 77, as The Buttonwood Grove)
Private collection, Stonington, Connecticut
By descent in the family to the present owner

Literature

(possibly) Linda Bantel, Forging an American Identity: The Art of William Ranney with a Catalogue of His Works, Cody, Wyoming, 2006, no. 127, p. 156, as The Buttonwood Grove
