Description

  • gold,sapphire,diamond,enamel,bangle-bracelet
The tapered bangle with scalloped edges, set in the center with oval cabochon sapphires, and old European-cut diamonds weighing approximately .50 carat, applied with royal blue enamel, internal circumference 6¾ inches, signed George E. Marcus.

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, June 19, 1991, sale 6192, Lot 3.

Condition

Set with 3 oval cabochon sapphires of medium deep blue color and translucent clarity, and 37 old European-cut diamonds of decorative quality. Very slight loss to enamel along top edge and side, not readily visible. Overall in very good condition. This bangle is not hinged, so it will be too small to slip over a larger hand.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

The central trefoil motif of cabochon sapphires in the center of this bracelet is identical to the motif in a suite of jewelry by George E. Marcus in "Moorish Style" illustrated by Penny Proddow and Debra Healy, American Jewelry: Glamour and Tradition, p. 56, pl. 29.
