Catalogue Note

This is a remarkable ensemble. The neat naskhi Qur'an has been bound into a fine jewelled enamel cover (apparently made for this manuscript, since the edges are finished with a distinct foliate motif), probably of 19th century Indian origin. Sometime later a rock crystal casket has been made to hold the Qur'an, and this has been inscribed with the Ayat al-Kursi (Surat al-Baqarat (II), v.255), one of the most popular verses of the Qur'an. Finally, an antique Indian betel-nut box has been fitted with an internal velvet stand to hold the rock crystal box.
