Description

  • Lapis lazuli
of cuboid form standing on four short globular feet, the sides of polished lapis lazuli, the gilt frame with vertical edges resembling fluted columns, the lapis lazuli cover mounted with a gold calligraphic inscription set with diamonds, the interior of the hinged lid with inscribed plaque, the base covered with velvet, with original handwritten translation from the War Office in accompanying frame

Condition

This item is in good overall condition. MInor scrateched and darkening to the lapis lazuli, especially to the top surface and the areas near the frame. MInor thining of the velvet covering the base. With fitted box. As viewed.

'Given by H.H. The Shahzada Nasrulla Khan of Afghanistan in recollection of his visit to England. Sept. 1895.'

This magnificent royal casket was manufactured from fine lapis lazuli and silver gilt. Its lid is mounted with gold, set with numerous diamonds and inscribed with the aforementioned text to serve as a royal gift from H.H. the Shahzada Nasrulla Khan of Afghanistan to H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught. It was presented with a letter of which the original translation—included in the present lot—is as follows: 'This little trifle, namely one casket of lapis lazuli is sent by way of remembrance from Shahzada Nasrulla Prince of Afghanistan, in token of his personal friendship to H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught.' 'Wednesday 12th Rabi al awal 1313 Hijri ie 3rd Sept 1895.'
