Condition

Good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture: hairline cracks and small holes; chips on tip of chin and top of the head. "N°91" in white pigment and label "A.I" on reverse. Deep glossy dark brown partially shiny patina.

Catalogue Note

A la parfaite régularité du visage et de ses traits finement modelés répond la force des volumes dont les reliefs alternent courbes tendues et angles marqués. Très beau témoin de la confluence des styles Dan septentrionaux et méridionaux, ce masque se distingue également par l'intensité de l'expression. Le volume des paupières et la ligne – rare – des sourcils accentuent la finesse des yeux plissés, caractéristiques, selon Fischer et Himmelheber (1984 : 102), des visages féminins dont ils sont censés figurer le sourire. Profonde patine d'usage, sombre, brillante sur les nervures.
