A tureen of this form is illustrated and discussed in detail by Michael Cohen and William Motley, Mandarin and Menagerie. Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures, pp. 184-5, no. 12.5, where the authors note that the form may derive from German or French faience models of the mid-18th century.
