Description

  • walnut
the paper-scrolled cresting rail above a baluster-form splat flanked by S-scrolled stiles above a shaped bow-fronted drop-in seat within a conforming apron raised on cabriole legs headed by stylized shells and ending in pointed pad feet.  The underside of each chair with an embossed label THE ANTIQUES AND DECORATOR'S LEAGUE INC (?) / NEW YORK, one with chalked number 6919 and stamped VI, the other with chalked number 6919 and stamped II.

Condition

Overall fair restored condition; slightly sun-faded color. The first with two patches to veneer; the right stile replaced with loss to the cresting rail at join with right stile; old repaired break to left end of cresting rail at join with left stile and now with two plugs; age crack to back side of splat; bottom of splat with losses at join with shoe; top of apron with some replacements to the veneers; the apron with replaced veneers behind the left shell carving and to the right of the shell carving approximately 5 1/2 inches by 3 inches; patch to the left of the shell approximately 1 1/2 inch by 3 inches; rubbing and wear to the shell carving; back feet with two replaced sections to edges; back legs with later plugs to sides; old worm damage throughout. The other chair with old repaired break to the cresting rail at join with left stile and with plugs; losses to the base of the splat at join with the shoe; some replacements to the veneers to the top of the apron with inpainting; the apron with some replacements to the veneers behind the right carved shell and to the right of the left carved shell; age cracks to veneers; crack to back right leg at join with seat rails and with two later plugs to the side the back left leg with a later plug to the side at join with seat rail; front left side bracket replaced; back bracket replaced; wear and rubbing to the shell carving; old repaired break to left stile above join with seat rail; later drop-in seat. Overall with shrinkage and age cracks to veneers with old worm damage throughout; some old marks, scratches and scuffs especially to feet and legs consistent with age and use.
