A Regency mahogany wine cooler in the manner of Gillows circa 1810

the fluted hinged oval top surmounted by an oval sunflower-form finial and opening to an interior once metal-lined and now compartmentalized, fitted with a drain hole, raised on reeded baluster-form turned supports ending with brass-capped casters.  The underside with a printed partial paper label stamped ...TE & Co., Ltd., / ... Depository.

Good quality, nice color to timbers and veneers; overall good restored condition; wear to finial; the top with slight warpage; small age crack to back left corner, chip to veneer of back left corner at edge approximately 1 1/2 inches by 1/4 inch; some old minor nicks to the fluting; some age cracks to veneers of rim with slight lifting in places; the latch to the lock to the underside of the rim now seated on shims due to warpage of top; chip to veneer to the left of the lock plate and replacement to veneer around the lock plate; once metal-lined, fitted with a drain and now later compartmentalized; slight rippling to the veneered case and with thin age cracks due to shrinkage consistent with age and use; the underside of the lower molded edge with some vacant screw holes; the underside with a lead-lined drain hole; overall with some old scratches and scuffs.

The reeded baluster supports on turned tapering legs are almost identical to those on a wine cooler by Gillows offered Christie's London, 18 April 1996, lot 231. A related wine cooler of oval form with turned baluster legs is illustrated in Percy Macquoid & Ralph Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 3 vols, rev.ed., 1954, vol. I, p.223, fig. 9; another is illustrated in M. Harris, A Catalogue of Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, part III, p. 405, fig. F17135.  Numerous examples of this type have been sold recently including one from the collections of Lily and Edmond J. Safra, which sold in these rooms, November 4, 2005, lot 539 ($33,000), and another sold at Sotheby's, London, June 30, 2004, lot 97 (£30,000).
