Description

  • Jules Leleu
  • Dining Table and Eight Chairs
  • table inscribed J. Leleu
  • mahogany and nickeled bronze

comprising six side chairs, two armchairs and a table with two additional leaves

Provenance

Sotheby's New York, December 6, 2002, lot 210

Condition

Very good overall condition. The table has an overall clean and glossy finish to the surfaces. One short end of the table top with rubbing at the upper edge in two places. Two opposite corners of the tabletop each have a shallow chip through the finish and into the wood below, the larger is 3/4 of an inch long and would benefit from a sensitive restoration. The inner corner of one of the legs has a small old infill repair where it meets the base. The nickeled-bronze mounts are clean and bright and are likely replated. There are some modern screws to the underside of the top. The ultra suede upholstery on the chairs is rubbed notably to the front edge of the seats and with other small areas of wear and light soiling. Three of the chairs have piping that is detaching from the chair backs and would benefit from re-securing. Two chairs are slightly loose. Two chairs have spliced repairs to a back leg where it joins with the seat. The two additional leaves have a slightly different grain and presently have a matte surface finish. The leaves are each 19 3/4 inches long and have some minor surface marks from packing and storage. The suite has an overall deep rich color and is an impressive example of this model..
