Catalogue Note
David Wu Ject-Key was born in Guangdong in 1890, immigrated to Canada in 1902 and studied art at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in Toronto and the Central Academy of Art in New York. He specialised in both portrait and landscape painting. The artist once said that when painting a person one must study the subject carefully and explore the person's personality. The work must depict the structure of the human body and the charm, character and status of the subject. In landscape painting, the artist believed that one must capture and interpret the delicate changes of light seen in the four different seasons and in the ambience of both dusk and dawn.
