Catalogue Note

Whilst at university, Cheng Yong's work was often selected to be exhibited in the National University Art Exhibitions.  In 2006, Cheng Yong graduated from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art where he developed a strong foundation in Realist painting styles.  However, Cheng Yong often uses the language of Realism to convey more of a surrealist feeling in his works.  In Youth, Cheng Yong meticulously describes a house and a zebra crossing in a city setting.  In the foreground, the artist depicts a girl with long black hair, seemingly lost in thought.  However, the overly clean roads and the brand new buildings convey to the viewer the feeling that there is no one else living there, and that the city has no trace of life.  As if set in an unreal virtual world, the woman in the foreground has been placed in a freeze frame shot; the canvas exudes a feeling of alienation between the human and object and between people and the urban environment.
