Catalogue Note

Tang Yunyu was born in 1906 in Shanghai and took an interest in art from an early age.  After graduating from the Shanghai Art Academy, she went to study abroad in Japan and France, returning to Shanghai in 1930 to teach at the Shanghai Art Academy.  She played an active role in the local art scene and was an important member of a not-for-profit art organization, The Painting Research Institute, alongside fellow artists such as Pan Yuliang, Zhu Qizhan and Wang Jiyuan, who together held a group exhibition to promote Modern Art.  The work in this sale, Still Life, is representative of the style of that period in Shanghai and exudes a refined gentility, set in a harmonious atmosphere and is painted in an impressionistic style.
