Condition

There is a crack to the board approximately 5cm. long near the centre of the left hand edge which has been repaired. The surface of the board is slightly rough in the very bottom edge of the right corner. The very far edge of the top left corner is bare of paint, this could be slight frame abraision. Otherwise the work appears in good overall condition. Under ultraviolet light there are isolated flecks of retouching in places across the surface and an area to the above mentioned crack. Contained in a light coloured painted wood frame. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

The letter written by the artist, which is attached to the reverse reads:

Sunday Thoughts of Blue 57 My thoughts are crowded out by nostalgic imagination to the almost complete destruction of memory. All that comes to me is a battle about figuration verbally  in letters with my great friend Roger Hilton. At that time in Leeds I had attempted to use a kind of "figure" shape either horizontally or vertically- but it had to have no resemblance to Picasso figure distortion. Remember Moores (sic) reclining figures were dominating British sculpture. I used the rhythm I liked the linear drawing that finished up with chevrons used for structural reasons and very often a submerged nipple delight, sensuality being a very important feeling on top of a good structure.
