Condition

The relief is sound. The surface of the work is beautifully worked and contains many areas of scratching and staining which are inherent to the work. There are a few small areas where the paint is particularly thin and in some case is missing: for example at the bottom of the vertical black line in the upper right corner, in two or three places below this and just above the black paint in the top left quadrant. There is some minor cracking to the paint surface in a few places where the pieces of the relief have been attached to the main body of the relief. Otherwise the work appears in good overall condition. Under ultraviolet light there appear to be no signs of retouching. Held in a large dark stained wooden box frame under glass; unexamined out of frame. Please contact the department on 0207 293 6424 if you have any queries about the present work.

Catalogue Note

This large wooden relief is a seminal work by Ingham who studied at St Martin's before completing his training at the Royal College of Art and the British Academy in Rome. Having eventually settled in Cornwall, Ingham's work became inextricably linked to the St Ives school of painters. Ingham's works can be found in many public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum and Glasgow City Art Gallery.
