Catalogue Note

Lucien wrote to Esther Pissarro on 12th May 1914 about the showery weather portrayed in the present work:

'My work is progressing very slowly and I don't think that in this second fortnight I will have more than a rainy effect done... but when I think of it it does not matter very much, as in the state they are in I can turn them in to anything according to the general bend of the weather - but of course I ought to finish them before the end of May or I shan't have anything to show at Carfax!' (Pissarro Family Archive, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, quoted in Thorold, op.cit., p.104).
