Catalogue Note

Springer has painted this work for the exhibition Levende Meesters at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam in 1847, for which he won the Gold Medal. It has been suggested that Springer painted this subject as a celebration of his marriage, which took place on 7 May 1846 in The New Church in Amsterdam.
