Overall good condition; the alabaster shades each with some areas of dirt and wear; one shade appears to have been cleaned; very minor nicks to rims and to bases around joins with lamps; gilt bronze retaining original gilding and with areas of dirt and wear; small areas of oxidation; rubbing and wear to stems; small chips and losses to edges of marble bases; sturdy.

The present torchères are based on an English Regency model, one of which (executed in gilt-bronze) is in the Library or 'Green Drawing Room' at Windsor Castle and was made by the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell for George IV in 1811.  (See Hugh Roberts, For the King's Pleasure, London, 2001, p. 112, fig. 114)  The design is very similar to a design for 'Drawing Room Candelabri' in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, pl. 112.
