Condition

Overall in good condition and impressive scale and presentation. With the usual minor scratches to patinated surface but with a large dent to the right side of the figure's right arm located near the elbow. This dent is of approximately 1 inch long by 1/2 inch wide. The Levanto rouge marble base with minor chips to edges. The ebonised wooden plinth with loss of black paint to edges. The gilt-bronze acanthus cast branches well cast and chased but with the usual tarnishing consistent with time. Although it is difficult to be certain of the extend of gilding left, the branches are tarnished and could be cleaned. There might be some wear to gilding though.

Catalogue Note

Although lacking a foundry mark, the quality of the casting and chasing is of very high Parisian standards. When making unique or very large works for private or grand commissions, It was customary for the best Parisian bronziers of the mid 19th century, such as Denière and Barbedienne, to not sign their work.  The present torchères, which are incredibly well cast and chased and are of very large proportions could have been placed on either side of a grand staircase in the entrance of a private Hôtel Particulier or in some grand public space.
