Provenance
Gustave Bourgain (acquired from the artist. Bourgain (1855-1921) was an artist known for his military and marine paintings and was a student with Edelfelt under Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1874-77)
Condition
Original canvas. There are spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably in the lower-left quarter and along the extreme left edge, with other spots around the figure's left eye, under an uneven varnish. There is scattered fine craquelure throughout the work, with stable craquelure notably in the background to the left of the figure's head and in the dark pigments of her bonnet. There are clusters of minor pinholes in the corners of the work and in the upper centre. Held in an elaborate, wide plaster and wood gold-painted frame.

The model in the present work also posed for Edelfelt's famous painting Queen Blanche, shown at the Paris Salon in 1877 and now in the Ateneum, Helsinki.
