Condition

Original canvas. There are areas of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably extensive retouching to the sky, notably near the cupola and near the ship in the left background. Apart from a fleck of paint loss at the centre of the extreme right edge, a small area of pinhead-sized flecks of paint loss at the centre of the extreme lower edge, and scattered small areas of craquelure only visible under raking light, this work is in good condition, with rich, fresh colours and areas of strong impasto. Held in a simple, wide, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The Mihrishah Sultan Fountain, located in the Küçüksu district of Istanbul, was built by Mahmut II (1785-1839) in 1806. This fountain was named after the Genoese wife of Sultan Mustafa III, who instigated many reforms as Valide Sultan during the reign of their son, Selim III.
