Condition

Unexamined out of frame and under glass. Apart from time-staining to the sheet, and a few scattered pinhead-sized scuffs and scattered water-stains along the lower edge, the sheet is in good condition. This work is in overall good condition, and ready to hang. Held in a narrow, decorative gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame, with a cream, hand-decorated mount, under glass.

Executed in the 1850s.

The sitter for the present work is Berlin painter and engraver Alexander Friedrich Werner, Menzel's close friend and helper. Werner made painstaking copies in pencil of Menzel's paintings to serve as prototypes for the engravers of the latter's work.
