Condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting has not been cleaned or restored for a number of years and will benefit from a reappraisal of its condition. The canvas has an old lining which is sufficiently supporting the surface. If the picture were to be cleaned a layer of airborne dirt and a heavy, yellowed varnish would be removed; the varnish has been particularly heavily applied in the left sleeve and in the face and neck. Although old restorations are expected to become more apparent beneath an old varnish, in this case it seems more than likely that the condition of the paint is very good, even in the darker colors of the background which are typically susceptible to thinness. There are no restorations visible at present, but it is likely that there will be some around the edges, in the upper left and right corners particularly, and probably interfering with the top of the first initial "E" of "E. Munier".
