Catalogue Note
The present work painted circa 1849 is likely a study for A Young Bather held by the Hermitage State Museum, St. Petersburg. The Hermitage's example in which an adolescent girl in similar pose is seated in a grotto is signed and dated 1849 (see: Albert Boime, Thomas Couture and the Eclectic Vision, New Haven, 1980, p. 336, illustrated pl. IX.60).
