Lined, under UV: inpainting to address frame abrasion upper left and bottom edges, a few scattered dots of inpainting in upper register of the sky, ¼ inch diameter of inpainting in clouds beneath long horizontal branch, some strokes of inpainting in lower right corner.

According to Madame Burdin-Hellebranth the present work is a study for Harpignies' Les Corbeaux, paysage exhibited at the Paris, Salon, 1863 (no. 883).  Les Corbeaux is now held by the Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa (gift of Mr. Friedrich Eckstein, 1910, accession no. 165) with the title The Last Days of Summer (The Crows, Landscape).
