The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting is in very good condition. The canvas has a fairly old glue lining and the paint layer is stable. The painting has been quite recently cleaned and restored, and should be hung as is. There are some restorations visible under ultraviolet light in the face and hair of the girl, diminishing some thinness to the paint layer, which in all likelihood is original. There may also be some clumsy cosmetic restorations around the eyes and in the shadowed side of the cheek on the right of the face. There seems to be no good reason why any of this restoration is required, since the picture appears completely unabraded. The slightly grainy texture to the pigment, which is visible particularly in the clothing of the young boy, may be present in the hair and face of the girl, which is perhaps what caused some of the unnecessary restoration.
