Catalogue Note

Barye designed over forty decorative objects. These incorporate both his animalier and figurative subjects which were mostly created as independent works. In the present candelabra Barye demonstrates his inventiveness with the charming inclusion of three tiny tortoises (models from his period chez Fauconnier) at the bases. The organic forms running up the stems of the candelabra look forward to the Art Nouveau, whilst the snakes hidden in the foliage can be seen as alluding to the Garden of Eden. These candlesticks form part of a very rare edition by Brame.
