Catalogue Note

The mythical queen Semiramis was said to have been born to the Syrian goddess Atargatis, from her union with a mortal. Abandonned by her parents, she was raised by doves in the dessert. She grew into a beautiful woman and married one of the king's generals. Ninus, King of Babylon, was captivated by her beauty and married her after her husband committed suicide. She reigned as regent after his death and was sometimes credited with building the hanging gardens of Babylon. Whilst a historical record of her existence is hard to prove, her legend has been incorporated into the writings of some of the most influencial literary figures including Dante and Voltaire.
