Catalogue Note

In the summer of 1874 Carpeaux was staying with his friend Alexandre Dumas fils at Puys, near Dieppe. On 24th July he wrote about one excursion: 'Going from Dieppe to Puys I saw from the height of the carriage the profile of a beautiful pair of legs walking along under a ragged dress coming down only to the wearer's kness. I was struck by the majesty of this waif.' From this incident Carpeaux developed his Pecheuse de Vignots. Despite being one of Carpeaux's last works it was produced in terracotta, marble and bronze.
