Catalogue Note
Milles' Struggle for Existence was modelled between 1899 and 1900. It was conceived while Milles was working in Paris and was himself poor and familiar with hunger.
The impressionistic surface of the model strongly demonstrates Auguste Rodin's influence on Milles. It is also likely that Milles was influenced at this time by the Belgian sculptor Constantin Meunier.
