Description

  • Vellum
three cuttings, each approximately 75mm. by 75mm., with pale beige initials with brightly coloured acanthus-leaf sprays at edges on burnished gold grounds, enclosing three half-length portraits of men (most probably Old Testament prophets, note that two wear the Phrygian hat common in medieval iconography of the Jews), two bearded, two with large scrolls, one gesturing to the document before him, on blue grounds heightened with white tracery, some scuffing to gold, and minor chips from faces of figures, else good condition, laid down on modern card together

Catalogue Note

By a follower of Cristophoro Cortese (active c.1390-1445). The long pointed fingers and angular facial features of the figures point towards a series of cuttings, one of which is published by Palladino, Treasures of a Lost Art, 2003, no. 60, and another sold in our rooms, 20 June 1995, lot 32.
