Mary I (queen of England 1553-1558) and Philip II king of Spain, grant for George Tyrrell with large royal seal, and other Tudor charters in Latin and English, on vellum

Description

eighteen documents, including: (a) large royal charter of Philip and Mary, 280mm. by 570mm., 41 lines of professional secretarial hand with some calligraphic extensions to ascenders of initial letters, large tear at top of charter with loss of a few words from text, large royal seal in dark brown wax attached, with the couple enthroned together on the front, and riding together on the reverse, seal 145 mm. in diameter, some minor loss to outer edges and wear to detail, else in good condition, dated February 1558; (b) a 'letters close' of Queen Elizabeth I, in original state with a long vellum reference tag with the details of the addressees at end, once wrapped around the rolled up document and sealed, 360mm. by 65mm., good condition, 1582; (c) agreement in Middle English between Sir Nicholas Bacon (1510-1579), here "knyghte Lorde Keeper of the greate seal", bibliophile, manuscript collector and personal friend of Archbishop Matthew Parker, and Thomas Audrones, with the personal signatures of Bacon and Audrones, 495mm. by 700mm., 52 lines with a large calligraphic initial, excellent condition, dated 1561; with 15 other documents: 5 from the reign of Mary and Philip, 10 from the reign of Elizabeth I, 12 with attached seals, all with minor stains, folds, small holes and some cockling (one with serious damage), else fair and presentable condition
