Description

4 leaves or cuttings, (a) a Funeral Mass, leaf from a Book of Hours, 186 mm. by 143 mm., miniature in an arched compartment, 92 mm. by 68 mm., showing two biers before an altar, priests and mourners singing in the choir stalls, other mourners with candles, above a large initial and 4 lines of text (opening of the Office of the Dead), full border of burnished gold ivyleaves and coloured flowers, a bird, and a bearded grotesque riding backwards on a monster and about to club its rear end, verso with 14 lines of text, France (possibly Savoy or eastern France), c.1440; (b) Christ enthroned, attended by cherubim and seraphim, full-page miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours, 153 mm. by 105 mm., verso ruled for 21 lines, France (probably Paris), early sixteenth century; (c) All Saints, historiated initial 'L' from a Gradual, 108 mm. by 110 mm., showing Saint Denis holding his own mitred head standing between Saints Laurence and Stephen, other saints behind including St Christopher, verso with part on 2 lines of text and music on a 4-line red stave, cut to shape, rather worn, France (probably Paris), early sixteenth century; and (d) Christ preaching to his apostles, historiated initial 'D' cut from a very large choirbook, initial in blue with white decoration on a burnished gold ground, verso with part of a line of music and of text ("[Alle]luia") in a very large gothic hand, cut to shape, France (perhaps Paris), early sixteenth century; all mounted; in a red morocco case
