Catalogue Note

The sitter's father, William, was Master of the Cheshire Hunt while her grandfather, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker (1824-1893), proprietor of the Warrington brewery, built the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool at a cost in excess of £50,000.  The gallery was opened and presented to the town in 1877. In recognition of his public services Walker was knighted in 1877, and created baronet in 1886. Liverpool made him its first honorary freeman in January 1890 before his death in 1893.
