Catalogue Note

The date on the map is highly significant in Greek history as it marks the beginning of the Greek Revolution. The first uprising against the Ottoman empire occurred in the Danubian Principalities on 6 March 1821. Although this was soon put down, on 17 March the Maniots declared war and on the 25th Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution at the monastry of Agia Lavra near Kalavrita. By the end of the month the Peloponnese was in open revolt against the Turks.
