Catalogue Note
Bryce (1877-1918) worked with Winston Churchill at the London Morning Post as a staff photographer. During the Indian campaign he served with the 4th Hussar regiment and later, upon outbreak of the Boer War, under Colonel R.G. Kelwick at Kimberley. In 1899 Bryce photographed the battles of Dundee and Elandslaagte. He recorded the march of 13,000 soldiers with Lord Methuen from the Orange River Station to Kimberley and later travelled to the Modder River where Boer forces under Koos de la Rey fought the British. Later he travelled with Churchill near Estcourt, but avoided capture there with Churchill. Bryce was with the Highland Brigade on December 11, 1899 when General Methuen attacked the Boers near the Magersfontein Hills. After the battle of Diamond Hill, Bryce and General Roberts linked up with General Buller from the Natal-Pretoria railway. On August 27 Bryce photographed the last major battle of the Boer war at Bergendal, when General Buller lead the British counter-attack to achieve victory. The photographs include many views in and around Graaff Reinet in South Africa and Katagum, Hadeija, Zungeru and Lokoja in Nigeria.
